Travel Safe Seminar

Look at the pretty flyer I made! I really am learning a lot of skills in this fellowship.

There are so many ways to fundraise.  Seriously, sky is the limit in regards to creativity and utilization of your resources.  With that in mind, last week we held a self-defense seminar for travelers!

For the last year and a half I have been attending Krav Maga classes with Close Combat and Fitness out in Metairie.  They have been amazing classes and I really have learned so much (which, given that I am a natural pacifist, is really saying something!).  The owner Louis generously offered to teach the seminar, donating 100% of the proceeds to my water project.

Insert a squeal-like noise of complete excitement.

In addition to the self-defense techniques that Louis taught, a good friend of mine, and a reformed thief, donated his time to speak with the participants about pickpockets, theft prevention, and other country-specific crimes.  He had us play a pickpocketing game and I have to say, I came out on top in stealing bits of cloth from people’s front pockets!  Maybe if this international development stuff doesn’t work out, I’ll have to try becoming a Bourbon Street pickpocket.

Louis showing an awesome lady from Tulane how to counteract being shoved into a wall.  If you look at the groups from front to back it’s like a time-lapse of the technique.

We had an awesome time and much laughs were had by all.  Sadly, some amazing women from a New Orleans shelter were not able to attend due to a van issue, BUT this just means we’ll be holding a Women’s Self-Defense Seminar at the end of January in New Orleans for them and any other women who wish to attend!  Wahoo!

Thanks to the donations from the attendees, we have now raised OVER $2,400 for the water project!!!  Absolutely amazing.  Thank you all so much for your support and keep your eyes peeled for our next campaign.
