Updates from the Field

CURRENT POPULATION SERVED: 3,700

With a deep well drilled down to sea level, the Chiga Community Water and Sanitation Project has the capacity to serve 30,000 people!

In 2013 a tower was built at the site of the well. With a water storage tank 30 feet off of the ground, we have the capacity to pipe water up to 6 kilometers in any direction. Because this water is fed by gravity filtration, we don’t need any more electricity or expensive mechanical parts to serve the wider community.

Our Lady of Perpetual Support manages the Chiga Community Water and Sanitation Project and is responsible for repairs, maintenance, and financial management.

There are two kiosks fed by the Chiga Community Water and Sanitation Project, one at the site of the well (population 1,500) and one in the nearby village of Kadiju (population 2,000). Water is vended from these kiosks at a cost of 2 Ksh per jerrycan (20 liters), a cost that is completely accessible by the low-income population served by the kiosks.

The Project has expanded to provide private taps to ten homes as well as St. Francis Primary School, serving over 200 primary school children, significantly improving the financial sustainability of the Project!
